I decided to do something a little different.
On the main blog, I wrote about the emotional masks we wear. How we need to take them off and be known. How God knows our true self, and yet we try to hide it from him and a lot of those around us.
Instead of going deeper on an element of that blog here like I usually try to do, I decided to write a poem about it. Yes, a poem. I used to write all sorts of poems. It’s actually what first made me fall in love with writing. And it just felt appropriate here.
So I present you with, “The Masks We Wear.” See what hits you…
On the red carpet, the stars arrive
They wear their dresses, their costumes, their ties
Their full grandeur on display
Every single one trying to win the day
With faces veiled and masks in tow
Their hidden truths no one should know
I scoff at them, but then I hear
A voice within, the Spirit’s near
“Your masks are many, too, you know
The fear and shame you try not to show”
I pondered this and knew it true
For I have worn disguises, too
In youth, I wanted to belong
I copied those who seemed so strong
Afraid my flaws they’d see too clear
So I hid behind a false veneer
The truth is that we hide our hearts
We use masks and walls to cover scars
But that creates a loneliness
The more and more we try to suppress
There’s an answer, though, I’ve come to see
It starts with radical honesty
True love and trust, without pretense
Sharing our dreams without defense
From there we must give all our hearts
To the One who’s been there from the start
Only he can quench our deepest need
To be known and loved despite our deeds
He sees our flaws and loves us still
And that love we could never, ever kill
He longs for us to walk with Him
Through every loss and every win
So take the step and let Him in
He’s there despite your darkest sin
Shed your masks, make that your goal
There’s peace to be found within your sou
