Churches reach out: Part 1

We received an encouraging letter the other day from someone who wanted us know what was going on in her church.  The letter was so encouraging, we decided to break it down into two parts.

Our Pastor was so impressed with the philosophy of “I Am Second” that he wanted to engage our congregation and challenge them during the season of Lent. As we were doing a Bible Study called “Walk Across The Room,” we decided to do the “I Am Second” challenge as a follow-up with the wristbands and “I Am” New Testament Bibles. The wristbands became the conversation starter that many of our “timid” congregational members needed. They simply used the front page of the Bible as a study guide, discussing the “I Am” scriptures within their families and then committing those verses to part of the conversations they had with other people. During Lent, members were encouraged to do daily scripture reading, daily accountability, and daily sharing with others (particularly non-believers). Both the wristband and the Bible encouraged each of the people who used them to share their faith. These tools also seemed to spark confidence that each person could share their belief as they were sharing a conversation about being a Second!

What a cool way to get the whole church involved in outreach!  What are some things you’re doing for Lent?  When people ask you about it, are you able to share Jesus with them?

Where are YOU going this year?

One of the lesser known parts of I Am Second is our awesome parent organization, e3 Partners- an organization dedicated to sending everyday people into the world to share the story of Jesus.  They make it easy to say “yes, I’ll go.”  If you’re looking for a way to make a huge impact for Christ and have a blast doing it,  come with I Am Second on an Expedition.  It will truly change your life.  Take a minute to watch this short film and find out just what an Expedition is.

Helping With Horsepower

The message of I Am Second is to put Christ first in everything. When we do that, He often gives us amazing ways to demonstrate His love for others. Laura Klock, whose story is shared in her I Am Second film, is getting to do just that.

She and the company she and her husband Brian own, Klock Werks Kustom Cycles, are participating in a program called “Helping with Horsepower.” She teaches teenage girls how to restore a motorcycle. But these young women are not your average teens. They’ve dealt with difficult family circumstances and are learning to overcome life obstacles. How can fixing a beat up bike help? Watch the whole story here- Helping With Horsepower.

What can I do?

Part of my job here at I am Second is to coordinate volunteers for our transcribing needs. It’s a little bit tedious, but I am encouraged every single time I have a deadline. One post to facebook saying “I need some volunteers” and all of the sudden I have about 100 volunteers ready and willing to help! Something about this campaign makes people want to jump in a get involved. We love that! We love our volunteers and we love seeing people take this ministry and run with it.

Let me give you a little bit of insider information on I am Second. It should never be about “What we’re doing”. Obviously, it’s about Christ. But specifically, it’s defined by I am Second empowering YOU to make disciples. I am Second is only as effective as the people who take it and do something with it—those people who see its potential and they get after it. I want to give you—a reader of this blog, a fan of I am Second, a believer in Christ—a few ideas and opportunities to use I am Second to reach those who need Christ. The holiday season is quickly approaching and there is a lot of buzz around this office with different ways to for YOU to jump in. These range from big to commitment to smaller easier tasks. If half of our fans picked one thing and did it, who knows what kind of movement it could start! So here’s the list:

  1. Start an I am Second Group – Are you looking for a way to engage your friends in spiritual conversation in a non-threatening way? Our discussion groups will do the trick! I get emails every single day about people wanting to join an I am Second Group, but the truth is, most of the locations they bring up don’t have an I am Second Group yet. That means we need some people to step up and start groups. If you haven’t check out anything about I am Second Groups, or want to know more, visit http://iamsecond.com/getinvolved/GroupTools.html.
  2. Hope for the Holidays – This is a tool to help you reach out to people that you know are hurting and will be having a tough holiday season. It is a shorter version of a usual I am Second Group and has three lessons focused on different areas of pain. http://iamsecond.com/hope
  3. Holiday Merchandise – Just in time for Christmas, we have a bunch of holiday gear you can order that will are great conversation starters. Anyone who has a shirt can tell you: I am Second gear opens up so many doors for conversation! Buy something for you, your friends and your family online: http://members.printable.com/theodeeco/iamsecond/
  4. Post – This week we’ll have two new videos an I am Second video on your facebook page, blog, or twitter account. We have videos posted on both facebook (http://www.facebook.com/iam2nd) and youtube(http://youtube.com/iamsecondhq) to make it extremely easy for you to turn around and post to your profile, or status. Share I am Second with your friends and strike up some conversation. You never know who will be touched!
  5. Volunteer – There aren’t always opportunities to volunteer at events or transcribing, so that’s why I’m giving you these other options. But if the opportunities do arise, we’d love to have you help us out!
  6. If you have any other ideas tell us about them! – This is by no means an exhaustive list. If you can think of other ways to share Christ using I am Second, let us know about it!

I’ve listed these in order of potential spiritual impact (which usually has to do with time commitment as well). We would love for all of you to at least try starting an I am Second group if you have the time. It will change you!

So what are you going to do?

Shay

Being Second on Halloween?

I’ve been asked numerous times this week what I will be doing for Halloween, and as I think about what my answer will be I am rushed with ideas of trick-or-treating and going to the annual costume party. What is my response? Sure I’ve dressed up in costumes a few times and gone trick-or-treating, or even gone to a few parties. But this year is a bit different. My focus is intentionally and prominently shifted from myself to God, for now I am Second. What comes across my mind now is a question. How can you use this holiday to show those around you what being Second means? Just as Halloween is an opportunity to be creative with our costumes and have fun, it can be an opportunity to be creative in ways to bring this Good News to those around us, our family, friends, and especially our neighbors.

One awesome I idea I heard this week is reverse trick-or-treating; dress up and go around the neighborhood and instead of asking for candy, share something. Take a moment to share not only something tangible (candy, or a non-traditional treat) but also share our greatest possession, Christ. The challenge is to do something, be something different, and not for yourself, but out of the position of I am Second with the intention of lifting up Christ.

How can you lift up Christ in Halloween? How can you change the essence of this holiday to one that allows you to position yourself as Second? I have a good idea what I’ll be doing now, and how I can lift up Christ on this holiday.

Do you have a plan? Share what you are doing, or what you did to lift up Christ this Halloween.
