Pride

The habit of thinking and acting First

If there were an opposite to love, pride would be it. While love puts others first, pride is a commitment only to self. Love cares about the needs and desires of another. But pride only wants what’s best for self. At the heart of pride is a misunderstanding of what it means to be human. Rather than seeing people as equally valuable and important expressions of their Maker, pride believes only in the solitary and lonely belief of “Me.”

Pride promises happiness. But like so many false belief systems, pride cannot live up to its promises. Get what you want first, and happiness will follow, pride promises. But what if humans were made to want love above all else? Happiness, then, only can come by giving up pride and choosing instead love.
